Helen White is a clinical psychologist with over 15 years’ experience working in Community, Adult, Child and Adolescent Mental Health clinics in Perth and Adelaide. Helen has a warm and engaging style and is direct in her approach. She sees a broad range of clients across all age groups, specifically adults, couples, families, teenagers and younger children.
Children, teenagers and families
Helen understands that when a child or teenager is struggling this can also have a big impact on the rest of the family. As well as helping your child work out how to better manage their feelings, Helen will take a whole family approach to finding solutions. This can include;
- Improving your connection with your child
- Helping parents work together more effectively to manage unwanted behaviours
- Working with the whole family together
- Fostering trust, communication and respect within the family
- Helping parents to better understand what is happening for their child
With teenagers, Helen is aware of the dual importance of teenagers having some space to talk by themselves and take charge of their own recovery, while still needing the support and involvement of their parents.
Helen works with couples to reconnect with their values and positive intentions in their relationship so that they can work together to find solutions to their struggles. She sees the problems as located in how couples are relating and understanding each other and will work with you to find ways to better understand and listen to each other and to communicate more positively and effectively with each other ,rather than getting caught up in the blame game.
Helen offers both short-term, solution-focused work more on specific problems (e.g. panic, anxiety, low mood, relationship issues) as well as longer term psychotherapy to help you better understand yourself, your strengths and your struggles.
Her approach is warm, open and down to earth with a strong focus on establishing a safe and trusting relationship where you can explore your needs and find ways to more easily navigate the ups and downs of life.
Helen incorporates strategies from a wide range of evidence based practices including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Family Therapy, Schema Therapy and Mentalisation Based Therapy into her strengths based, relationally focused approach to treatment. She has further training in systemic family therapy, attachment theory and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, all of which inform her practice.
Helen has experience dealing with a wide range of issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidality, emotional and behavioural dysregulation, trauma, family conflict, school refusal, anger management, attachment issues, gender dysphoria, eating disorders, relationship issues, self-esteem and identity issues. If you are having struggles in an area not listed here but think Helen might be a good fit for you, then please contact the clinic to check if she feels she has the skills to help you. Research shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the most important contributing factor (that the therapist can influence) to helping therapy be effective .
