Helen White is a clinical psychologist with 20 years’ experience working in Community, Adult, Child and Adolescent Mental Health clinics in Perth and Adelaide. Helen has a warm and engaging style and supports her clients to find individually tailored solutions to their issues. She provides individual therapy for adolescents (aged 15 and up) and adults, and also offers couples and family therapy.*
*Please note that only individual therapy sessions are eligible for Medicare rebates under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative. Couple and family therapy sessions are not covered by Medicare but may be claimable under your private health insurance (please check with your provider).
Helen offers both short-term, solution-focused work more on specific problems (e.g. panic, anxiety, depression) as well as longer term psychotherapy to help you better understand yourself, your strengths and your struggles.
Her approach is warm, open and down to earth with a strong focus on establishing a safe and trusting relationship where you can explore your needs and find ways to more easily navigate the ups and downs of life.
Helen is aware of the dual importance of teenagers having some space to talk by themselves and take charge of their own recovery, while still needing the support and involvement of their parents. Depending on what is needed, therapy with adolescents may be done individually or may also include parents in the session (or a blend of both). When an adolescent is struggling this can also have a big impact on the rest of the family, so as well as helping your teenager work out how to better manage their feelings, Helen can also take a whole family approach to finding solutions. This can include:
- Improving your connection with your teenager
- Helping parents work together more effectively to support their children
- Working with the whole family together
- Fostering trust, communication and respect within the family
Helping parents to better understand what is happening for their teenager
Family life is often complex as individual family members can have different ways of thinking, talking and expressing themselves, and families are often working hard to balance everyone’s different needs and styles. Families can also face challenges through the life span such as having a member struggling with mental health issues; dealing with changes in financial circumstances; children entering adolescence or leaving home; parental separation; or transitioning into retirement; all of which can lead to stress, conflict and unhappiness within the family. Helen has specific interest and advanced training in Systemic Family Therapy and uses these skills to help families unpack any unhelpful patterns of interaction that are keeping problems in place and turn their attention and efforts to finding successful solutions together.
Helen works with couples to reconnect with their values and positive intentions in their relationship so that they can work together to find solutions to their struggles. She sees the problems as located in how couples are relating and understanding each other, and will work with you to find ways to better understand and listen to each other, and to communicate more positively and effectively with each other, rather than getting caught up in the blame game.
Helen incorporates strategies from a wide range of evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Family Therapy, Schema Therapy and Mentalisation Based Therapy into her strengths based, relationally focused approach to treatment. She has further training in systemic family therapy, attachment theory and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, all of which inform her practice.
